Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with Calley Means to discuss his viral Tweet stating that he “saw inside the room” of Coca-Cola’s tactics to ensure sugar-sweetened beverage taxes failed and that soda was permitted in government-funded nutrition programs. (If you are keen, look up his sister, Dr Casey Means.)
They also mention Dr David Lidwig, at Harvard University, who is someone else you should know about.
The show notes say;
“We are amidst a metabolic health crisis that has taken the world by force, hijacking our biology, creating cellular dysfunction, and ultimately making us overweight, depressed, infertile, and chronically ill. Our broken food system and the politics that influence it are to blame. The incentivization of processed grains, refined sugar, and sugar-sweetened beverages for profit has created an internal breeding ground for inflammation, insulin resistance, obesity, diabetes, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease. “
“Perhaps the most devastating part of Big Food and Big Soda’s agenda is that it comes at the cost of destroying the cellular and metabolic health of the next generation. Nearly 25 percent of USA’s children meet the criteria for prediabetes, and 40 percent of children are clinically diagnosed as obese. “
(For the purpose of this post you can stop at 13 minutes.)
Then they begin to talk about the broken politics in the USA. Calley and Dhru talk about why diet and nutrition guidelines are a bipartisan issue that deserves equal attention from the left and the right.
They also discuss the role of education in health and how research studies, academic institutions, and the media are funded by pharmaceutical and Big Food lobbyists that skew data in favor of their food or drug products.
The biggest lie we’re taught is that; “We don’t know why obesity, heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s are exploding as health problems.” The excuse is made that, “health and nutrition are complicated” and that we need more research. That’s not true. We do know, “The processed food we eat is a slow poison, it’s toxic. And there is no profitability in advising people what to eat. “
(You can stop at 13 minutes if you like.)
I’m concerned to learn the university I most trust regarding diet, The Friedman School of Nutrition Science, at Tufts University, is not immune to the lure of industry funding. You can read about Dariush Mozaffarian – Cardiologist, and Dean at Tufts University, here. His view is absolutely “mainstream” in terms of current nutrition science.
We wrote about Dariush Mozaffarian, in May 2022.
Their latest work is Food Compass, a “Ranking Healthfulness of Foods from First to Worst” a process doomed to failure if your perspective is dominated by your funding sources.
The T.H. Chan School of Public Health at Harvard since the 1950’s has apparently producing science to order, because of industrial funding. They have been producing “new research” announced almost every week, which might be helpful in granting some poor PhD student a degree but adds little or nothing to our health knowledge.
In a similar way The University of Sydney, has become a world authority on the glycemic index, financed by the Australian Sugar Industry, and intended (like the Coca-Cola example) to give sugar a “pass mark” as a healthy food.

I am a teacher at a public school. I have taught in three US states and I sometimes have to cover lunch time at schools. It is very sad and concerning to see children eating lunch filled with sugary options: yogurt, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, french fries, pizza, pasta, fried chicken, graham crackers, etc, etc, etc. I would like to educate but we are not allowed to talk about food. Once, I mentioned in my class that white table sugar is bad and I was reprimanded by my principal when the parent called back complaining!
I try not to be judgmental when it comes to parents ignorance and lack of education when it comes to the food options they allow their kids to eat! It’s like swimming against the stream!!!

The best healthcare system would result in almost no sickness or metabolic dysfunction in the first place. Prevention is better than managing symptoms or doing amazing surgeries that could have been prevented. After three weeks mostly off carbs in 2019 and my feet stopped hurting, after almost 15 years of frequent limping!!!! In 2019 I needed help getting up onto my feet. Not a problem now.
My husband also tried low carb and magically his 2x+ per week bad migraine headaches he suffered with from childhood STOPPED happening!!! We don’t get canker sores anymore either which used to be a frequent problem.
This nutrition truth has the potential to trash the whole global economy if word gets out too fast. Poverty and societal breakdown kills people too. Dang, I wish everyone could know fast, but farming can’t change fast enough. Invest in goats, sheep, chickens, fatty fresh water fish, nut trees, berry bushes/trees, perennial vegetables & herbs.
The establishment WILL fight nutrition truth vigorously. They’ll lose eventually, because the drastic fast health improvements after switching to low carb eating and intermittent fasting get noticed by friends and family.
Besides, the healed people just can’t be quiet about nutrition reality. Our health declined, especially with bad problems between 30-48. It’s very exciting to feel better over 50 than under 30 like us. We definitely have less pain and other health problems than we did under 30.
